What is Ultra Cycling

Ultra Cycling is a cylcing event that goes beyond what most cyclists do either in terms of distance and/or climbing.

We do not feel that most century rides (100 miles) are ultra cycling events. To us, ultra cycle events are those that require much more effort to complete. The human body does not perform in a linear fashion. Most marathon runners feel that the last 6.2 miles rquires as much effort as the first 20 miles. The same is true of ultra cycling events. As the miles increase and the climbing continues, the effort to complete the next part becomes increasingly more difficult.

150 equivalent miles in a day

(total miles plus 5 for each
1,000 feet of climbing)

We choose to define an ultra cycling event as an event where the combination of miles plus 5 for each 1.000 feet of climbing, to be at least 150. For a 100 mile event, it would need 10,000 feet of climbing to meet our criteria. For a totally flat ride, you would need to go 150 miles.

For those fortunate enough to live in California, there are many ultra cycling events each year that are within driving distance. They occur most every month of the year and with the weather making it suitable to train year round, that is makes a lot of sense. See the list of events

To complete an ultra cycle event training is needed. I fyou are thinking about doing your first double century, or ride with significant climbing check out our training section.
